'Some Day'

'Some Day' – a simple title; a simple song, you say. That is normally an accurate assessment if you aren’t paying attention. Now, take this song, listen to it sung and interpreted by Mario Lanza, and then you will have experienced something both wonderful and amazing. It is probably one song that most people would include on their Lanza favorite list – automatically, without thinking, a true example of a “no-brainer” choice. What is its charm? Why does it grab the heart and hold on to it forever? Let’s take a closer look ...
Initially, I would say, Mario draws on his vast talent, his innate musicality, to make this song live and breathe. By changing his intonations and inflections, he exhibits many moods, including: tenderness, hope, wistfulness, resolution and strength. Oh, yes, throw in sincerity, excitement, anticipation, and assuredness without arrogance, and you have the makings of a significant piece of music. Is all that in this little song? Oh, yes! He tells us musically, that some day “will” happen. It can be tomorrow, the next day, or next spring. It really doesn’t matter. We know it is true because he will have convinced us by the end of the song.
Listen, then, as he begins in a lovely lyric voice: “Some day you will seek me and find me. Some day, of the days that shall be ...” He is not tentative, but rather, gently and soothingly stating a fact. He builds on this carefully and slowly, as he continues, “Surely, you will come and remind me of a dream that is calling, for you and for me ... ” Ooooh, a shared dream? Now, that grabs our attention and we want to hear more. What makes this all more exciting on the second reading of this line, is the exquisite phrasing as Mario holds, “for you and for me ...” and begins the next line, “Some day,” before he breathes again.
All throughout the song, Mario executes a softly flowing pattern, like the waves in the ocean. His voice alternately rises, sometimes soars, and recedes again, creating a calming effect. Hear it as we go on, “Some day, when the winter is over, some day in the flush of the spring ...” Now, the second “some day” sounds almost wistful, does it not, as Mario pulls back? But wait! Don’t leave him now! He is assuring us that the melancholy mood, caused by winter, will go away and, by the steady rising tone in his voice, he encourages us go along willingly with him, to find the freshness and hope of spring. By the time we hear him sing, “spring,” we are elated and joyful once again! Oh, my goodness, what does he have in store for us next?
Perhaps it is “anticipation” time? Yes, I believe so, as Mario sings, “My soul (going up) shall discover the soul (going down) born for her lover ...” Hold on to your hats now. Are you ready to soar? Okay, then, Mario is going to take us on a flight high above the clouds. He never hesitates on his ascent, “... the man with the heart of a KING”!!!! We are breathless and filled with awe from the tremendous power Mario unleashes on that last glorious word. Whew!!! Did you look down? Are you dizzy? At the very least, you should feel exuberant and exhilarated. In that last line, Mario proves that every man can be a king in his heart if he is loved. It is a truth that he wants known, and now we do.
After listening to Mario pour “his” heart into this song, do you have any doubt that he deserves to reside in the realm of the kings?
